Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer, has weighed in on the “Where is Kate Middleton?” controversy.
On BBC’s “Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg,” Spencer spoke out about the swirling rumors surrounding Kate Middleton's whereabouts. She’s made no public appearances following her “planned abdominal surgery” in mid-January. Her absence from the public eye — plus other palace missteps — has triggered a rash of conspiracy theories to swirl on social media and throughout the culture at large.
“I do worry about what happened to the truth,” Spencer, 59, said on the show about Middleton, who is the wife of his nephew, Prince William.
When asked about how the current Middleton media storm compares to the “press intrusion” surrounding his sister Diana and her 1997 death, Spencer said he felt the media spectacle was worse for Diana then.
“I think it was more dangerous back in the day,” Spencer said in the interview. “If I look back to ’97 and Diana’s death, I think that was so shocking, the circumstances of her death were so shocking that it did make the industry that supports the paparazzi really consider more carefully what it could and couldn't do, not because they had a moral judgment, but because it was unacceptable to the public."
The rampant speculation about how Princess Kate is doing — and exactly where she is — comes as the Palace insists she’s still recovering from surgery. However, royal watchers have found it strange that Middleton has hardly been seen publicly since Christmas.
She was photographed in a car with her mother on March 4 and again in a car with William on March 11, but the veracity of both images has been questioned.
On UK Mother’s Day, Middleton posted an image of her with her kids, which the Associated Press and other outlets later retracted because of it was heavily edited. The shot, which was allegedly taken by William and posted by Kate Middleton, left many viewers with questions about whether the photo was real and, if so, when it was taken.
When and where Middleton will surface next remains to be seen, but if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that the public is dying to see the “Where’s Kate?” question answered once and for all.
